Gait Recognition from Motion Capture Data

Gait recognition from motion capture data, as a pattern classification discipline, can be improved by the use of machine learning. This paper contributes to the state-of-the-art with a statistical approach for extracting robust gait features directly from raw data by a modification of Linear Discriminant Analysis with Maximum Margin Criterion. Experiments on the CMU MoCap database show that the suggested method outperforms thirteen relevant methods based on geometric features and a method to learn the features by a combination of Principal Component Analysis and Linear Discriminant Analysis. The methods are evaluated in terms of the distribution of biometric templates in respective feature spaces expressed in a number of class separability coefficients and classification metrics. Results also indicate a high portability of learned features, that means, we can learn what aspects of walk people generally differ in and extract those as general gait features. Recognizing people without needing group-specific features is convenient as particular people might not always provide annotated learning data. As a contribution to reproducible research, our evaluation framework and database have been made publicly available. This research makes motion capture technology directly applicable for human recognition.Comment: Preprint. New Czechoslovak Hyphenation Patterns, Word Lists, and Workflow

Space- and time-effective segmentation and hyphenation of natural languages stay at the core of every document preparation system, web browser, or mobile rendering system. We use the unreasonable effectiveness of pattern generation with patgen. It is possible to use hyphenation patterns to solve the dictionary problem also for close languages without compromise. In this article, we show how we applied the marvelous effectiveness of patgen for the generation of the new Czechoslovak hyphenation patterns that cover both Czech and Slovak languages. We show that developing universal, up-to-date, high-coverage and high-generalization hyphenation patterns is feasible, generated from semi-automatically prepared word lists from actual language usage. We evaluate the new approach and argue that the new Czechoslovak hyphenation patterns bring significant coverage and generalization improvements, and space savings. We share all the data, word lists, and workflow for reproducibility and usage

Effective Creation of Self-Referencing Citation Records

Acquiring citation records from online resources has become a popular approach to building bibliography for one's publication. LaTeX document preparation system is the most popular platform for typesetting publications in academia. It uses BibTeX as a tool used to describe and process lists of references. In this article we present a simple method that allows to automatically create a full self-referencing citation record for a collection of papers typeset and published within one proceedings of a conference. This greatly facilitates access to the bibliography entries for anyone who wishes to use them as part of their own publication.Získávání citačních záznamů elektronických zdrojů se stalo standardním požadavkem na vydavatele.

The design and architecture of MIaS (Math Indexer and Searcher), a system for mathematics retrieval is presented, and design decisions are discussed. We argue for an approach based on Presentation MathML using a similarity of math subformulae. The system was implemented as a math-aware search engine based on the state-of-the-art system Apache Lucene. Scalability issues were checked against more than 400,000 arXiv documents with 158 million mathematical formulae. Almost three billion MathML subformulae were indexed using a Solr-compatible Lucene.V článku je navržena architektura nového systému, MIaS (Math Indexer and Searcher), a návrh je zdůvodněn. To představovalo indexování téměř tří bilionů matematických podformulí v MathML pomocí Solr-kompatibilního rozšíření Lucene

You Are How You Walk: Uncooperative MoCap Gait Identification for Video Surveillance with Incomplete and Noisy Data

    Get PDF
This work offers a design of a video surveillance system based on a soft biometric -- gait identification from MoCap data. The main focus is on two substantial issues of the video surveillance scenario: (1) the walkers do not cooperate in providing learning data to establish their identities and (2) the data are often noisy or incomplete. We show that only a few examples of human gait cycles are required to learn a projection of raw MoCap data onto a low-dimensional sub-space where the identities are well separable. Latent features learned by Maximum Margin Criterion (MMC) method discriminate better than any collection of geometric features. The MMC method is also highly robust to noisy data and works properly even with only a fraction of joints tracked. The overall workflow of the design is directly applicable for a day-to-day operation based on the available MoCap technology and algorithms for gait analysis. In the concept we introduce, a walker's identity is represented by a cluster of gait data collected at their incidents within the surveillance system: They are how they walk

This paper describes the following technological aspects of blended learning of mathematics: effective preparation of electronic teaching materials suited for different students' needs, videotaping of mathematics lectures, automated (self)testing of subjects taught using the computer algebra system Maple and preparation of interactive teaching materials with the MapleNet technology. Authors describe results achieved during preparation and implementation of these challenges in a Calculus course taught at the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University in Brno, in Autumn 2006.Článek je věnován technologickým aspektům výuky matematiky s využitím výpočetní techniky a komunikačních technologií (blended learning): efektivní příprava elektronických výukových materiálů, nahrávání přednášek, příprava a realizace autotestování s využitím technologie MapleNet.This paper describes the following technological aspects of blended learning of mathematics: effective preparation of electronic teaching materials suited for different students' needs, videotaping of mathematics lectures, automated (self)testing of subjects taught using the computer algebra system Maple and preparation of interactive teaching materials with the MapleNet technology. Radical Process Improvement by Systematic Approach to Overcome Problems on Custom Glass Eyes Manufacturing

    Get PDF
This paper deals with resolving problems with special orders of glass eyes by innovating the process step where the problem occurs. The problem is that when only a few complex eyes are ordered, many prototypes must be made to find glass that fits together and a suitable technique to get the demanded coloring of the iris. The Innovation by Increasing Ideality method based on TRIZ (Theory of Inventive Problem Solving) principles was used to radically improve the process in a way to overcome this problem. A solution was proposed from ideas and proposals generated by the use of the method and TRIZ tools. A new technique of layering resin with paint on the basic crystal eye was found as a possible solution. The technique was tested on several samples and compared with already known and used production methods. The comparison showed that the proposed solution could be used on very complex eyes with better results and lower costs. Also, this proposed technique can be easily improved to get even better results in the future
